US Travel Bans Under Trump

Locked Door

Since President Trump took office, he has introduced dozens of separate travel bans using both executive orders as well as presidential proclamations. Some of these are narrowly targeted and may only include a small number of people involved in certain conflicts in certain countries. Others are much broader and include entire countries, or more recently with the COVID-19 pandemic, all countries. This article summarizes the current travel bans as of June 24, 2020, but only for informational purposes, and individuals are highly recommended to schedule a consultation to discuss any particular case.

The following is a list of proclamations and orders suspending entry to the United States by the Trump Administration, and does not include earlier proclamations and orders that might still be in effect for certain groups of people.

Summary of Travel Bans

As noted above, there are many separate travel bans at this time. Some of them target very small groups of people that are not relevant for the vast majority of visa applicants. A few are extremely broad. Some contain exceptions that are narrower than other bans, and someone might therefore be banned under one proclamation while not under another.

Below is a table listing some useful information about who is banned from entering the United States. Note that these are typically visa and entry bans, which are not usually applicable to those already inside the United States. They are also subject to numerous exceptions, which cannot all be noted in table so it’s important to review each case carefully.
